TreatmentsAt DermCare we provide unwanted hair removal treatment using the latest medical grade IPL technology to both female and male clients. Hair can be removed from all body areas including upper lip, chin, underarms, arms, legs, back, chest and bikini line. We will customize your treatment depending upon your hair and skin type, and the area of the body to be treated.

The treatment’s aim is to destroy hair follicles without damaging surrounding tissues. This is accomplished by the delivery of highly controlled flashes of light that are selectively absorbed by hair follicles below the surface of the skin.  The absorbed light heats the hair, in the process damaging or destroying the re-growth potential of the hair follicle.

For safety reasons and to optimise the treatment plan, a ‘patch test’ is done one week prior to commencement of treatment. During each treatment session the patient is required to wear dark glasses to protect his/her eyes from the bright light.  After application of a cool gel to the patient’s skin, the smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently applied to the skin and pulses of light are delivered to destroy the hair follicles. The skin is cooled down afterwards for 10-15 minutes and Aloe Vera gel is applied to soothe the treated area. Usually hair falls out 7-10 days after treatment. As hair goes through different phases of growth, patients usually need 6-8 treatment sessions with 4-6 week intervals between sessions.

The procedure entails momentary, slight discomfort, at the time of delivery of each pulse of light and the patient may experience a feeling of mild sunburn for a few hours after treatment. All side effects are rare and machine operator and/or protocol dependent. Side effects include localised mild redness and swelling, loss or unevenness of skin colour in dark skinned people, superficial burns, scarring, and skin infection.

Patients must not be tanned if they want to have IPL or laser hair removal, as their skin will react adversely to the treatment. Furthermore patients need to be careful in avoiding the sun for up to a year post treatment as their skin becomes more sensitive to the sun as a result of treatment.

In general, lesions strongly associated with melanoma (e.g., dysplastic moles, lentigo maligna) should not be treated with IPL or laser.
